What’s a Precinct?
Every election year, the voters of California elect 20 State Senators, 80 Assemblymen, 52 or more Congressmen and a President or Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, and various other public officials. Every person in the United States lives in a neighborhood precinct, which is the smallest geographical political boundary, established by the government. A precinct is the area served by a single polling place, and an average precinct contains approximately 900 voters. There are approximately 24,000 precincts in California.
Why It’s Important
Elections have been won and lost by less than one vote per precinct. In 1990, Dan Lungren, the Republican candidate for Attorney General of California, defeated his Democrat opponent by 28,906 of about 7 million votes cast, a margin of ½ of 1% or 1 vote per precinct. In 1998, Bill Jones was reelected Secretary of State, defeating his Democrat opponent by 89,738 of 7 million votes cast, a margin of 1% of 3½ votes per precinct. In 2010, Tim Donnelly won the Republican primary for the 59th Assembly District by a margin of 631 votes or a margin of 1½% or 1.3 votes per precinct.
